Senior runner Zach Michon won gold medals in the mile and 3000m race on March 1 at the 2020 Atlantic 10 Indoor Track and Field Championships. As a re- sult, Michon was named Most Outstanding Men’s Track Performer.
“Part of being able to race well is being able to react to anything,” Michon said. “I was ready
for really anything in that race. I just kept myself up on [the leader’s] shoulder and when the time came I put down that last kick.”
The mile and 3000m races were sched- uled closely together during the meet. Michon had little time to prepare for the 3000m after his victory in the mile.
“It is a hard event to double back in,” Michon said. “I spent a lot of time replenishing. I was trying to perk myself back up for another race later on in the day.”
Last year, Michon also won gold in the mile but finished third in the 3000m. This year, he credits his double gold medals with a sim- plified approach.
“I feel like a whole different runner as far as confidence goes,” Michon said. “It wasn’t like I was thinking ahead and said I wanted to win every A-10 race this year. It was more of a take every race one at a time. I feel like taking that approach keeps my focus on what I have to do next.”
